Wokeism and Cults: Examining Common Characteristics of Dangerous Ideologies

Defining Wokeism and Cults

Wokeism is a term that is used to describe a social and political movement that attempts to emphasize awareness of and opposition to social and political injustice, particularly with regards to issues of race, gender, and identity. The term “woke” is often used to describe someone who is politically “aware” and “socially conscious”, and who believes they work to challenge systems of oppression and inequality. While Wokeism professes to be a force for positive social change, it has some negative aspects akin to a cult. Some potential negatives of Wokeism include divisiveness, oversimplification of complex issues, censorship, and polarization.

A cult is generally defined as a small group that is centered around a single person, idea, or activity. Cult members often exhibit extreme devotion to the group, ideas, and leaders, and may exhibit a willingness to perform unusual or extreme actions on behalf of the group. Cults are often known for their use of manipulation and coercion to recruit and retain members, and may involve the isolation of members from the outside world.

The importance of group identity in wokeism and cults

A strong emphasis on group identity and group membership: Both cults and Wokeism often place a strong emphasis on group membership and the importance of aligning with the beliefs and values of the group. This can involve the adoption of specific language, dress, and other markers of group identity, and may also involve a sense of exclusivity or superiority over those who are not members. Group identity can be a powerful force, as it can provide a sense of belonging and purpose, as well as a way to make sense of the world. However, an overly strong emphasis on group identity can also lead to a loss of individuality and critical thinking, as well as to an us-versus-them mentality that can lead to conflict and exclusion.

“The Woke will be receiving ecstatic applause as they order the Apocalypse to submit to Wokeness and to stop being so cruel and heartless. Will the Apocalypse be laughing in response?” ― David Sinclair, Without the Mob, There Is No Circus

The Dangers of Black and White Thinking in Wokeism and Cults

A tendency to view the world in black and white terms: Both cults and Wokeism may involve a tendency to view the world in terms of good and evil, and to demonize those who do not agree with the group’s beliefs. This can involve the use of dichotomous thinking, in which complex issues are reduced to simple, dualistic categories. Dichotomous thinking can be a natural and useful way to make sense of the world, as it can help us to identify patterns and make decisions. However, it can also lead to oversimplification and a lack of nuance, as well as to the dehumanization of those who do not fit into the group’s worldview.

“At its heart, wokeness is divisive, exclusionary, and hateful. It basically gives mean people a shield to be mean and cruel, armored in false virtue.” ― Elon Musk

Exploring the Power Dynamics of Wokeism and Cults

A hierarchical structure with a leader or leaders who hold ultimate authority: Both cults and Wokeism may involve a hierarchical structure in which a leader or leaders hold ultimate authority and are followed blindly by members. This can involve the leader being seen as infallible or above criticism, and may also involve the leader using their authority to control the thoughts, beliefs, and actions of members. Hierarchy can be a natural and useful way to organize groups, as it can provide clarity and a sense of direction. However, an overly rigid hierarchy can lead to a lack of accountability and transparency, as well as to the suppression of alternative viewpoints.

Exploring the use of Physical and Social Isolation in Cults and Wokeism

A tendency to isolate members from the outside world: Both cults and Wokeism may involve a tendency to isolate members from the outside world, including friends and family, in order to more fully control their thoughts and beliefs. This can involve the use of physical isolation, such as living in a commune or other separate community, as well as social isolation, such as cutting off contact with non-members. Isolation can be a natural and useful way to create a sense of community and shared purpose, as it can help to build strong bonds between group members. However, it can also lead to a lack of exposure to alternative viewpoints and a loss of critical thinking skills, as well as to a sense of disconnection and loneliness.

The Dangers of Manipulation and Coercion in Wokeism and Cults

A reliance on manipulation and coercion to recruit and retain members: Both cults and Wokeism may involve the use of manipulation and coercion to recruit and retain members, including the use of guilt, fear, and other tactics to control behavior. This can involve the use of psychological manipulation, such as gaslighting or other forms of psychological abuse, as well as more overt forms of coercion, such as physical intimidation or threats. Manipulation and coercion can be effective ways to recruit and retain members, as they can create a sense of dependency and loyalty. However, they can also lead to a lack of autonomy and self-determination, as well as to a sense of fear and mistrust.

Conclusion: Wokeism and Cults

In conclusion, the five characteristics that I mentioned – a strong emphasis on group identity and group membership, a tendency to view the world in black and white terms, a hierarchical structure with a leader or leaders who hold ultimate authority, a tendency to isolate members from the outside world, and a reliance on manipulation and coercion to recruit and retain members – are commonly associated with both cults and Wokeism. However, it is important to note that these characteristics do not necessarily apply to every group or ideology, and it is not appropriate to label or categorize groups or individuals without careful consideration and understanding of their beliefs and actions. It is also important to be mindful of the language and framing used when discussing sensitive topics, and to be respectful of the opinions and beliefs of others, though don’t equate respecting others opinions, with not being truthful!  Always speak as truthful as possible.

For this reason, make sure to ask questions and for clarification any time you speak to any individual or individuals.  Lumping people into groups happens without our control, but remembering to ask people what they believe about something, before placing a label on them, will allow for maximum growth for everyone involved in the discussion.

“Woke and cancel culture are both signs of a judgmental culture, not a mentally mature one. A world where you cannot even speak to another person without worrying about what they are going to think of you, has not advanced much from the days when the white people used to own slaves. Let me tell you this, if you are kind, if you are compassionate, if you hold no discrimination towards people whatsoever, then you have no reason to worry about whether you are woke enough.” ― Abhijit Naskar, When Veins Ignite: Either Integration or Degradation
